A
resume is a menu, not a cookbook. It’s purpose (and it’s ONLY
purpose) is to encourage a prospective employer to invite you in for
an interview. Contrary to many claims, a resume will not get you a
job offer or a higher salary. You must do that during the interview
and negotiating process.
If
the resume is too brief or too general, it will not spark the
interest of the reader. Put in too much information and the reader
may feel overwhelmed and may not be able to focus on any specific
thing. In either case your chances of being invited in for an
interview are greatly reduced.
An effective resume strikes a balance between the two. Like a menu,
it should be attractive, uncluttered, easy to read, yet
INTERESTING. Like a menu, it should provide something that will be
of interest to a wide variety of readers in your field, yet not
provide all the details about how the individual dishes are
prepared. A resume is a menu, not a cookbook. |
